The XCentre offers two levels of training.
The first is designed to help people gain skills to get more from life, to help with independence, or simply for enjoyment and personal interests.
The second is aimed at enhancing particular skills to aid with employment, CPD or a specific work-related goal.
We can look at two workshops to help show the difference.
In a music workshop focused on life-skills, we may spend a lot of time looking at musical tastes, and using ideas for song-writing. The process will bring out ideas and views that the learner has about themselves and their life. Through a cooperative ‘rewriting’ of their initial song ideas, we can challenge or explore these views. In a small way, rewriting a song can help rewrite the way a person views an experience, and the way they approach similar experiences in the future. We still arrive at a song and the learner gains many song-writing and performing skills along the way.
In a music workshop for professional development, the focus is on improving the skills of the learner, offering new and better ways to achieve results. We would look at the software and hardware in use, and discus tricks and methods for producing music. It is about relating information and teaching, so that the learner can use their new skills to improve performance at work.
